Get Involved! Upcoming Volunteer and Internship Opportunities
The Center for the Urban River is able to thrive thanks to the help of our dedicated team of volunteers. Throughout the year CURB seeks help with our environmental education programs, Hudson River research projects, park cleanups, and more. We host individual volunteers, groups, and student interns. What's new for the fall?
Hudson River Seining Volunteers (Fish Survey)
CURB seeks volunteers for our Hudson River seining fish population research. Volunteers will assist staff with sampling the shoreline using a 30-ft seine net. Fish are identified, counted, measured, and released. Water quality data are also collected. Volunteer seining sessions will take place on Fridays at 1:00pm, with additional days/times possible. Each session takes about an hour to complete. The season generally runs from March - November. Prior experience is not necessary and we provide all of the equipment. Environmental Education Program Assistants
Throughout the year CURB hosts hands-on environmental education programs for local school and community groups. Topics include Hudson River seining, water chemistry, plankton, fish ID, and more. Volunteers assist staff during these programs, helping out with the activities as well as with classroom management. Prior experience is not necessary. This is perfect for those who enjoy working with children. Please check out the flyer below for more information on how to get involved.
Animal Care
CURB houses around a dozen fish and turtle tanks, featuring native Hudson River species as well as rescue turtles. Volunteers assist with tank and filter cleanings, feedings, and indoor/outdoor turtle basking. Help is needed throughout the year and hours generally take place during weekday afternoons.
Additional Opportunities
CURB offers internships to students looking to gain hands-on experience in environmental education, research and more. Interns play a vital role in supporting our education programs by assisting educators with our inquiry-based Hudson River lessons, team-teaching and leading classes. Interns also help out with our various research projects including water quality monitoring, eel migration sampling, and seining (fish population surveys).
Internship placements are available during the spring, summer, and fall semesters and may be non-credit or for academic credit. Prior experience in education, research, and/or Hudson River ecology is a plus but not required as training will be provided. All positions are unpaid unless otherwise noted. Internships for the Upcoming School Year
- Applications are being accepted for Fall 2026 internship positions with our seining research and/or education programs. These are unpaid and may be non-credit or for-credit.
