Yonkers High School Students Participate in CURB's Winter Water Academy

For four days during the Yonkers Public Schools winter break in February, students traveled to CURB ready to learn all about the Hudson River and its importance to Yonkers as part of the Winter Water Academy. Each day a thematic grouping of lectures and interactive lessons built a foundation of essential Hudson River knowledge. The week of learning culminated in students participating in a walking tour of the Yonkers Joint Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) - where they learned what happens to municipal wastewater once it leaves our sight.

The highlight of this trip included a visit to the WWTP lab. Students quickly recognized some of the scientific tools used by the analysis department after using the tools themselves in the program earlier in the week. Career exploration is baked into each component of this program and allows students to explore the possibilities of their future.

Ten of the student participants will be hired as part of the CURB Blue Team in the summer of 2023 to continue the research that was started during their time in the Winter Water Academy.

We thank the DEC Office of Environmental Justice for funding this program.
