Spring is here, which means it is the perfect time to explore downtown Yonkers! Student access is available via Campus Safety's Weekday Shuttle which leaves campus at 9:30am and 1:30pm daily. #sarahlawrencecollege #communityengagement

We are celebrating the start of the Spring season by visiting our marsh and observing through the lens of our camera. Follow along and see how many things you can identify!
Photo 1: Our Eel samplers take a lot of science tools out to the marsh to conduct their research. These tools include a net, a YSI probe, a container, a towel, scale and travel tanks.
Photo 2: Our fyke net during low tide sits atop the slimy and slippery marsh mud. Rocks hold the net in place as the tide brings in water from the Atlantic Ocean.
Photo 3: Eel samplers fill a bucket of water to wash the animals from the net. If more than 20 eels are caught, they will take a small trip into the center space to be weighed and counted!
Photo 4: Animal tracks are common on our marsh island. Today we observed the tracks of 2 different animals - geese and dogs.
Photo 5: Bubbles began forming in the shallow tide pools on the marsh island. This happens during warmer days like today and are naturally forming.

Today we are highlighting our yearlong partnership with the Einstein School of Medicine (@einsteinmed) student internship program. This program supports community groups around NYC by providing student intern hours over the course of a school year. Students will also work on a legacy research project alongside their internship hours as a way to contribute to the research being done at their internship site.
This week, these interns worked on building a new shed that will replace aging bins outside the center space to store programmatic material. We want to acknowledge and thank the City of Yonkers (@cityofyonkers) Community Development Block Grant for funding many improvements at CURB throughout the years including education and field supplies, lab equipment, technology upgrades, and classroom furniture.

Winter Water Academy students finished their week long learning with us by taking a trip to the Yonkers Joint Wastewater Treatment Plant! Students were able to experience the entire process of wastewater treatment from the mechanical removal of large inorganic material to the point where the water is introduced to the Hudson River.
Students were able to ask questions about the treatment process and even had a chance to enter the lab and see some of the working cultures used in the last steps of the processing under a microscope! For more information about our student programs, visit the link to our website in our bio.

Day 2 of the SLC CURB Winter Water Academy is focusing on the topic of pollution issues in Yonkers. After a walk around downtown to collect river samples from both the Hudson and Saw Mill Rivers, students learned about green infrastructure, cloud bursts, and daylighting in a presentation by visiting SLC faculty Dr. Bernice Rosenzweig.
After lunch, students will be processing their samples in our lab with CURB Director Ryan Palmer.

Even on a rainy day like today, our Sarah Lawrence College student scientists joined Jay in the collection of American Eel data from the fyke net.
Eel sampling during low tide can make it easier to check the net for species; but, it can also take a lot of coordination since the marsh mud can sometimes become difficult to stand and walk in. The group worked as a team to safely collect the caught species and brought them inside to be counted.
77 total American Eels at their glass stage were counted today and reported the the NYS DEC.

They're HERE! Last Friday, interns and staff enjoyed the beautiful weather by installing the fyke net for our annual American Eel study in the marsh behind the center.
Yesterday, Jay (Outreach Coordinator) visited the net and we recorded the entire scientific process of collecting data on the migrating species!
After collecting the sample from the net, Jay passed the river water and eels through a net and into a bin. Then, after a short trip to the center, Jay began counting the eels. Since there were more than 20 caught, he had to weigh them and record the information. All of the collected data will also be shared with the NYS DEC!
Collection of data will continue into May and YOU can help us in this research! If you are interested in counting American Eels with us, contact Jay at JMuller@sarahlawrence.edu or visit the link to our site in the link tree.
