Volunteering

The Center for the Urban River is able to thrive thanks to the help of our dedicated team of volunteers. Volunteers assist the staff in day to day activities such as education programs, research projects, park clean-ups, and animal care. In addition to long term volunteering commitments, we also offer single day events for student clubs, community organizations, scouts, and corporate groups. Our volunteer positions are open to participants ages 14 and up, and are available throughout the year. What's new for the fall?

CURB seeks volunteers for our Hudson River seining fish population research. Volunteers will assist staff with sampling the shoreline using a 30-ft seine net. Fish are identified, counted, measured, and released. Water quality data are also collected. Seining sessions take place on weekdays (time TBD) and take about an hour to complete. The season generally runs from March - November. For more information check out the flyer below.

Environmental Education Program Assistants

Throughout the year CURB hosts hands-on environmental education programs for local school and community groups. Topics include Hudson River seining, water chemistry, plankton, fish ID, and more. Volunteers assist staff during these programs, helping out with the activities as well as with classroom management. Prior experience is not necessary. This is perfect for those who enjoy working with children. Please check out the flyer below for more information on how to get involved.
