Volunteering

The Center for the Urban River is able to thrive thanks to the help of our dedicated team of volunteers. Volunteers assist the staff in day to day activities such as education programs, lab maintenance, park clean-ups, and office work. In addition to long term volunteering commitments, we also offer single day events for student clubs, community organizations, scouts, and corporate groups. Our volunteer positions are open to participants ages 14 and up, and are available throughout the year. For additional information please check out our Volunteer Brochure, or contact Outreach Coordinator Jason Muller at jmuller@sarahlawrence.edu.

CURB Seeks Volunteers for the 2019 American Eel Migration Study

Eel Volunteers

Each spring CURB participates in the NYS DEC's American Eel Migration Study. During this project, teams of scientists, students, and community members count migrating glass eels travelling up the Hudson River. The juvenile glass eels are counted (over 1,200 last year!) and released, with important information collected about their population and health in the Hudson River. Volunteers enter our marsh with waders to check a fyke net for the eels. We also measure water quality and weather conditions as part of the sampling. CURB is 1 of about 15 sites along the Hudson River watershed participating in this project.

Sampling typically begins around late February and continues through May. We are looking for volunteer help on Tuesdays – Thursdays at 3:30pm, and Fridays at 2:00pm. The sampling typically takes around 45 mins – 1 hour. Waders are provided for entering the marsh. Volunteers must be comfortable handling fish, as well as working in wet and muddy conditions. We sample rain or shine. (Ages 14+)

For more information please contact site leader Jason Muller at jmuller@sarahlawrence.edu.
